Getting The Lowest Price
While price isn't everything, it never hurts to save a buck or two when possible.  Here are your options:

  • Many companies will offer a discount (usually in the neighbourhood of about 10% - 15%) if the junk is piled in one place close to where they can pull up their truck (such as in a driveway or garage).
  • While there are advantages to hiring a major 'brand' franchise company, the prices are usually fixed quite high in order to cover the large overheads.  If price is your main concern, it may be best to stick to a local, small but established company.
  • If price is your only concern, look in your local paper's want ads under rubbish removal.  They'll have a list of 'man with a truck' who will smash the 800 Junk prices.  Unfortunately, while some of these men are hardworking and reliable, you are tossing the dice as to what their reputation really is.  There are definitely some drawbacks and possibly serious risks involved, so read the next section before going ahead with hiring an unknown, possibly uninsured guy with a pickup truck.  If you do call him though, understand that you will likely need to negotiate. Unlike an established company, an individual doing junk removal on the side may not have set pricing and will start high, expecting you to talk him down.

Price Isn't Everything
We all want value for our dollar, but value goes beyond merely the lowest price.  Sometimes value means finding the middle road between a high priced brand name and the lowest bidder.

When choosing a company to haul away your excess trash that the garbage man leaves behind, there are a couple of things to consider, specifically: Price & Reputation.

When it comes to branding, 1-800-Got-Junk? set the bar for the industry.  Of course, they also set the bar for high prices - often twice as high as the 'guy in the beat up pickup'.   However, if you want reputation and reliability, these guys can't be beat.

We recommend you shoot for the middle (which makes up the majority of the industry).  Many companies can cut 30%-40% off  the mega junk companies prices while maintaining a high level of service.  Without franchise fees to pay to a central agency and using map books to find your home rather than high tech gadgets (Do you really care whether the driver uses a map book or a geo tracking device to find your home?), these companies that choose the middle road can pass the savings on to you.
